AND THE WINNER IS……CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

The 15th edition of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards happened on Monday night with designer KERBY JEAN RAYMOND, of the popular fashion brand PYER MOSS, emerging victorious as the winner of this year’s award, and, the $400,000. cash prize that came with it. The CFDA, Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF) was created to encourage and showcase young, up and coming fashion designers to help launch, grow and position their work up to the next level. Past winners of this prestigious award include; Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, David Hart, and Telfar.

CULTURAL FASHION
Pyer Moss is a New York-based fashion label with founder/creator Kerby Jean Raymond, born to immigrant parents from Haiti and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. His fashion creations are drenched in meaningful creativity and always celebrates Black culture. Kerby launched Pyer Moss in 2013 and the line has experienced constant growth over the past few years, gaining attention from celebrities including; Rihanna, Usher, Erykah Badu and Tracy Ellis Ross among them. Kerby said he had the dream of designing a sneaker line since he was a kid at 10 years old. He attended the High School of Fashion Industries in New York City and credits Kay Unger for helping him find his path in the complicated fashion industry. “She put me in teams at 14 years-old, designing everything from bedding to pajamas to young women’s wear. I worked with Marchesa from when I was 16 years old.”

FINALISTS
Runners-up for the CVFF award were Emily Adams Bode for her Bode Menswear line, and Jonathan Cohen, both winning cash prizes of $150,000. each. The other finalists were; Batsheva, Hunting Season, Christian Cowan, Scosha, Luar, Matthew Adams Dolan, and Rebecca de Ravenel. The Brooklyn Navy Yard venue was transformed into a grand show-space, facilitated this layered event that began with cocktails. A sumptuous `Chicken Pot Pie’ dinner was served alongside Kim Crawford Wines, before the show and awards presentation happened. The winners were announced by actress Emily Blunt after a massive showing from each finalist. They all used performance art as a tool to showcase their collections. Pyer Moss had a choir in the balcony, while his models indulged in dance on the wide makeshift catwalk, models zipped around on Vespa scooters, drag super-star Shangela made a grand entrance in a Tesla vehicle, trapeze artists zoomed overhead…it was all part of the unique fashion presentation from the CVFF finalists.

Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director of Conde’ Nast, Anna Wintour said; “At a time when the world faces so many challenges, I’m impressed by this year’s winners. They are just not a credit to CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund as it celebrates its 15th anniversary, but also to the optimism and inclusivity of the very best American fashion.” Judges for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund were – Anna Wintour, designer Joseph Altuzarra, CFDAs Steven Kolb, designer Diane von Furstenberg, Saks Fifth Avenue’s Roopal Patel, Vogue’s Mark Holgate & Nicole Phelps, Instagram’s Eva Chen, Nordstroms Jeffrey Kalinsky and Theory’s Andrew Rosen.

IN ATTENDANCE
The luminaries attending this event came from a wide cross-section of pop culture influencers including; Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, Vogue’s Hamish Bowles, CFDAs Steven Kolb, musician Kriss Wu, actresses Renee Elise Goldsberry, Condola Rashad, Uzo Aduba, Logan Browning and Lala Anthony, Rev. Al Sharpton and Kathy Jordan, performer Justine Sky, and a huge contingent of fashion designers including several Fashion Fund former winners and finalists including: Zac Posen, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Victor Glemaud, Telfer Clemens, Marcus Wainwright, Wes Gordon, Giles Mendel, Joseph Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Juan Carlos Obando, Christian Siriano and Brandon Maxwell. Also in attendance were the model/muses who bring the designer’s creations to life: Grace Bol, Karlie Kloss, Dilone, Cindy Bruna, Grace Maharry, Karolina Kurkova, Aube Jolicoeur, Hilary Rhoda, Ebonee Davis, Chanel Iman and Shanina Shaik among them.
